HAYAVADANA

Hayavadana is a book written by the legendary author- Girish Karnad. It has been recommended by the Panjab University, Chandigarh for the students of BA and MA English. The book has been published by the well-established publisher- Oxford University Press. It is a novel of great significance. The plot of Hayavadana is derived from Kathasaritsagara, an ancient collection of stories in Sanskrit. However, Karnad has adapted it through Thomas Mann’s retelling of the story in The Transposed Heads. He has used the conventions and motifs of folk tales and folk theatre- masks, curtains, dolls, the story-within-a-story technique to create a bizarre world. He has created a world of incomplete individuals, indifferent gods, dolls that speak, and children who cannot, a world indifferent to the desires and frustrations, joys and sorrows of human beings. The book is an interesting play worth investing time. It gives a different perspective towards life and how one usually sees it. The author believes that this book will benefit the students in developing their keen interest in literature and its beauty. It is to be noted that the sub-plot of Hayavadana, the horse-man, deepens the significance of the main theme of incompleteness by treating it on a different plane.
