                                                 PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION

Coleridge is a phenomenon. He possesses the most vigorous mind among the English Romantic poets. Whereas in the other poets of this period romanticism tends to take a single dominant hue which colours the various objects of experience, in Coleridge it attains a fullness of complexity. But he is much more than a mere romantic poet. He possesses a sensibility which, by any standards, can be described ad 'modern'. His poems exhibit all the particularities of a period-piece, but the human experience they project is so universal that they will be read and admired by the generations to come. We can read them as psychological curiosities; we can also interpret them as great works of profound ethical value. The study of Coleridge as a poet, from any angle, should be highly rewarding.

Different poems of Coleridge are prescribed in almost all the Indian Universities at the Honours or the Post-graduate level. I have edited these poems to meet the specific demands of these students. Annotations are detailed and they comprehend all the critical points of view. The various aspects of the poems have also been discussed critically but with no effort on my part to make the discussion too scholarly or pedantic. Some university questions have been discussed at the end to serve as model answers. Some of the very latest criticism has also been incorporated.
